London Buildings and Sites: A Guide for Researchers in Guildhall Library
A guide to sources for tracing a building or site history in London.
This publication outlines the sources most useful to anyone tracing the history of a building or site in London. It focuses on material held at Guildhall Library but makes some reference to relevant source material held elsewhere.
The greatest emphasis is on post-1700 sources and on those which identify owners and occupiers. The book also considers specialist sites, for example theatres and public houses and the sources that can be utilised to trace their history.
Also included is a case study of Crutched Friars to demonstrate the kind of information that can be found and the sources used to do so. Please note that, while this is a Guildhall Library publication, some records listed will now be held at London Metropolitan Archives.
