Roman London's Amphitheatre
A tale of archaeological discovery, charting the history of the Roman London's Amphitheatre from its construction to its preservation and present day display at the Guildhall Art Gallery.
For over a hundred years people searched for the Roman amphitheatre of London, and it was only in 1988, during a planned renovation of the Guildhall Art Gallery, in the centre of the City of London, that this astounding discovery was made. A curving stone wall around the arena and timber beams for the seating tiers confirmed that the gladiators' place of spectacle - lost for over 1,500 years - had at last been found. The amphitheatre's remains have been open to the public since 2002, as part of a permanent exhibition, situated beneath the Guildhall Art Gallery.
