The Honour and Grandeur: Regalia, Gold and Silver at the Mansion House
This volume is the third in the series on the treasures of Mansion House, following The Harold Samuel Collection of Dutch and Flemish Paintings and the Magnificent Marble Statues: A Guide to the Sculpture at the Mansion House.
The book presents over 80 historic pieces housed in the Mansion House, offering a complete history into the City Guilds, Lord Mayors and plate collection.
Situated on the front cover is the City of London's best kept secret and greatest treasure! This unique Crystal Sceptre dates back to c.1420 and was gifted to the City of London by King Henry V after the victory at the Battle of Agincourt. Since then, it has only been seen at the inauguration of the Lord Mayor or during coronations, including Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, displayed for the first time to the public in 2015, during a temporary exhibition at the Guildhall Art Gallery.
Never before been photographed, you can read more about this historic sceptre - its history, materials and origins - as well as its first recorded outing, at the coronation of Catherine of Valois, the wife of King Henry V, in 1421 in this comprehensive and fascinating book.
